Have you ever been near a piece of exercise equipment and just standing next to it produced the results you wanted? No? Hmm, interesting…all joking aside, a backyard is kind of like that for dogs. You can put them out in a backyard all day long but most often dogs won’t exercise themselves.
All dogs need exercise for both physical and mental stimulation.
“Regular exercise is a necessity for your dog, the natural athlete. Regardless of his size, breed, gender or even his age, he needs physical activity in order to be a balanced, healthy animal. Exercise will keep his frame strong, his weight in the healthy range, and it can also help prevent or alleviate arthritis and other degenerative joint diseases.” – Dr. Mercola, healthypets.com
Don’t count out your little guys! If you think because they’re smaller they don’t need exercise, think again. “Even though these cuties are smaller than the rest, they still need exercise! They have a propensity toward obesity and often do not get the level of daily activity that they require.” These little guys certainly don’t need the same amount of exercise as the bigger guys, but they still need it.
Walking Is Where It’s At
In addition to the mental and physical stimulation, regular dog walks can help keep a lot of problem behaviors at bay, including chewing and licking hot spots due to boredom. Regular exercise can improve your dog’s mental health and reduce some behaviors done out of anxiety or boredom.
Some dogs simply do not get enough physical and mental stimulation. Bored dogs tend look for ways to entertain themselves, and chewing is one option. To prevent destructive chewing, be sure to provide plenty of ways for your dog to exercise his mind and body. Great ways to accomplish this include daily walks and outings.
